Studio portrait of 6542 Private (Pte) Sidney David Kirkland, 8th Battalion from Glenferrie, Victoria. A 26 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 14 August 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 21st Reinforcements from Melbourne on 2 October 1916 aboard HMAT Nestor. He joined the 8th Battalion in France in March 1917 and was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 25 October 1917. Pte Kirkland is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium, with others who have no known grave.
