Informal outdoor portrait of 15069 Gunner (Gnr) Herbert Lawrence Kitchen, 15th Machine Gun Company from Albert Park, Melbourne, Victoria. An 18 year old blacksmith prior to enlisting on 4 January 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 24th Howitzer Brigade from Melbourne aboard HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 4 May 1916. After disembarking in Egypt, he later sailed for England and then to France where he arrived in November 1916. Shortly after arriving in France, he transferred to the 15th Machine Gun Company and he was then killed in action on 25 January 1917. Gnr Kitchen is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. His brother, 15068 Gnr Alfred John Kitchen embarked with him but returned to Australia in December 1919.
