Studio portrait of 105 Private (Pte) Thomas Selwyn Lang, 26th Battalion from Melbourne, Victoria. He had previously served 19 months with the Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry, South Africa during the Boer War and may be wearing that uniform in this image. A 40 year old farmer prior to enlisting in the AIF on 15 February 1915, he embarked for overseas service with A Company from Brisbane, Queensland aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 24 May 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he served at Gallipoli from 4 September 1915 until the evacuation back to Egypt in December. He then proceeded to France in March 1916 where he was killed in action near Armentieres on 7 June 1916. Pte Lange is buried in the Ration Farm Military Cemetery, La Chapelle-D’armentieres, Lille, France.
