Studio portrait of 3859 Private Horace Samuel Lathby, 11th Battalion from Boulder, Western Australia. A 23 year old shop assistant prior to enlisting on 16 September 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 12th Reinforcements from Fremantle, Western Australia aboard RMS Mongolia on 22 November 1915. Following further training in Egypt, he proceeded to France in April 1916, was promoted to Lance Corporal in July to Corporal in February and to Lance Sergeant (L Sgt) in March 1917. L Sgt Lathby was killed in action at Louverval, France on 11 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
