Studio portrait of 2641 Private (Pte) John Learmonth, 52nd Battalion from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. A 28 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 24 May 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 8th Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion from Fremantle on 2 September 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises (A68). He served briefly with the 12th Battalion at Gallipoli and then transferred to the 52nd Battalion in Egypt after the evacuation. Pte Leamonth went with the 52nd Battalion to France where he was killed in action at Mouquet Farm on 4 September 1916. He is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
