Studio portrait in civilian clothing, of 2673 Private Thomas Samuel Lenton, 16th Battalion from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. A 33 year old miner prior to enlisting on 22 June 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 8th Reinforcements from Fremantle, Western Australia aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) on 2 September 1915. Immediately after disembarking in Egypt, he proceeded to Gallipoli where he joined the 16th Battalion on 23 October. He claimed to be one of the last to be evacuated from Gallipoli at the end of December. After returning to Egypt, he was transferred to the 48th Battalion in March and was promoted to lance corporal (L Cpl) on 14 April 1916. He proceeded to France with the 48th Battalion in June and was killed in action near Pozieres on 5 August 1916. L Cpl Lenton is buried in the Serre Road Cemetery No 2, Beaumont Hamel, France.
