Studio portrait of 949 Private (Pte) Hector Archibald Maclean, 38th Battalion from Mildura, Victoria. A 44 year old hairdresser prior to enlisting on 2 February 1916, he embarked for overseas with C Company from Melbourne on 20 June 1916 aboard HMAT Runic. On arrival in France, he served with Headquarters units and with the 38th Battalion and was killed in action at Messines, Belgium on 7 June 1917. He is buried in Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium.
