Studio portrait of 1784 Private Samuel Thomas Gladson Maddock, 8th Battalion from Albert Park, Melbourne, Victoria. A 21 year old painter prior to enlisting on 4 January 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 14 April 1915 aboard HMAT Wiltshire. While serving at Gallipoli, he was killed in action at the Battle of Lone Pine on 6 August 1915 and is buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. His elder brother 184 Private Arthur David Maddock also served in the 8th Battalion and was repatriated to Australia on 11 April 1916 for discharge due to illness.
