Studio portrait of 12637 Staff Sergeant Charles Teesdale Main, 11th Field Ambulance from North Adelaide, South Australia. A 28 year old chemist prior to enlisting on 26 April 1915, he embarked for overseas from Adelaide on 31 May 1916 aboard HMAT Suevic. On arrival in France, he was transferred to the Officer Cadet School and on 31 August 1917 was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. After joining the 35th Battalion, he was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 12 October 1917. Although he had been buried near where he fell, after the war his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
