Description

Studio portrait of 1044 Private (Pte) Jack Marfleet, 6th Battalion from Hawthorn, Victoria. A 19 year old electrician serving in the 56th Infantry Militia prior to enlisting in the AIF on 28 August 1914, he embarked for overseas service with A Company, 6th Battalion from Melbourne, Victoria aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) on 19 October 1914. Following further training in Egypt, he landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and was wounded in action and died from his wounds the next day onboard Hospital Ship HMNZ Goslar. Pte Marfleet was buried at sea off Gaba Tepe and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey with others who have no known grave.
