Studio portrait of 1783 Private (Pte) Joseph Marshall, 4th Battalion from Newtown, NSW. A 22 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 6 January 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 4th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 17 March 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he joined the 4th Battalion at Gallipoli on 31 May and was wounded in action on 8 August. Pte Marshall was evacuated to hospital at Mudros and then at Alexandria where he died from his wounds on 14 August 1915. He is buried in the Chatby Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Alexandria, Egypt.
