Studio portrait of 5148 Private (Pte) Vivian Bernard Martin, 52nd Battalion from Strahan, Tasmania. A 19 year old labourer with previous service in the 91st Militia Battalion prior to enlisting in the AIF on 13 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 16th Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion from Melbourne on 29 March 1916 aboard RMS Orontes. Following further training in Egypt, he joined the 12th Battalion in France and later transferred to the 52nd Battalion. Pte Martin was killed in action near Flers, France on 19 January 1917 and is buried in Bulls Road Cemetery, Flers.
