Studio portrait of 2236 Private (Pte) James Oliver Mason, 46th Battalion, of Richmond, Victoria. An 18 year old labourer prior to enlistment on 7 March 1916, he embarked with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 16 August 1916 aboard RMS Orontes. After a short period of illness in France, he joined the battalion and less than a week later, was wounded in battle on 10 February 1917. He died the next day at the 45th Casualty Clearing Station and is buried in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
