Studio portrait of 2440 Private (Pte) Allan McDonald, 59th Battalion from Fryerstown, Victoria. A 24 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 16 May 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 5th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 25 September 1916. After disembarking in England, he later proceeded to France in December 1916 and joined the 59th Battalion on the Western Front. Although wounded in action on 5 December 1917, his wounding was slight and he resumed duty that same day. Pte McDonald was killed in action on 9 April 1918 at Hamelet, eight kilometres from Amiens, France and is buried in the Adelaide Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France. His brother, 1302 Pte Douglas McDonald, 16th Battalion was killed in action at Gallipoli on 2 May 1915. [See image H06261.]
