Studio portrait of 1302 Private (Pte) Douglas McDonald, 16th Battalion from Fryerstown, Victoria. A 26 year old miner prior to enlisting on 16 September 1914, he embarked for overseas service with H Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 22 December 1914. After disembarking in Egypt and undertaking further training, he landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Pte McDonald was killed in action on 2 May and is buried in the Quinn’s Post Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey. His brother, 2440 Pte Allan McDonald, 59th Battalion was killed in action in France on 9 April 1918. [See image H06260.]
