Studio portrait of 2104 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) John Henry McDonald, 36th Battalion from Paddington, NSW. A 22 year old carter prior to enlisting on 28 March 1916, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 3rd Reinforcements from Sydney on 24 August 1916 aboard HMAT Anchises. After joining the battalion in France, he undertook further training and was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 12 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
