Studio portrait of 2057 Private (Pte) Duncan Gray McDougal, 31st Battalion from Murrumburrah, NSW. A 22 year old miner prior to enlisting on 24 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 3rd Reinforcements from Melbourne on 18 February 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat. After joining the battalion in Egypt, they proceeded to France where he was wounded in action and evacuated to England for medical treatment. On recovery, he rejoined the battalion and was accidentally killed while handling a box of grenades on 27 February 1917 in the Australian advance to the Hindenburg Line. Pte McDougal is buried in the A.I.F. Burial Ground, Flers, France.
