Studio portrait of 4485 Private (Pte) Lionel Allan McGilvray, 20th Battalion from Redfern, NSW. A 20 year old porter prior to enlisting on 15 December 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 11th Reinforcements from Sydney, NSW aboard HMAT Nestor (A71) on 9 April 1916. Following further training in England, he proceeded to France in September and was killed in action on 12 November 1916 near Flers. Pte McGilvray is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
