Studio portrait of 2256 Private (Pte) Thomas John McKinley, 8th Battalion from North Melbourne, Victoria. A 32 year old vulcaniser prior to enlisting on 8 March 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 17 June 1915 aboard HMAT Wandilla. Two weeks after arriving at Gallipoli in August 1915, he was taken ill with dysentery and evacuated to Malta and then onto England for medical treatment. He did not re-join the battalion until 29 July 1916 and served in France and Belgium where he was killed in action near Ypres on 11 September 1916. Pte McKinley is buried in Woods Cemetery, Belgium.
