Studio portrait of 455 Corporal (Cpl) George McKnockiter MM, 8th Battalion. A Joiner apprenticed to his father in Camperdown, Victoria, prior to enlistment at the age of 21, he embarked with his unit from Melbourne aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) on 19 October 1914. Cpl McKnockiter was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty in the field and was wounded in action on more than one occasion. Cpl McKnockiter died of sickness on 31 May 1916 whilst aboard the hospital ship Kanowna. His name is inscribed on the Chatby Memorial in Alexandra which commemorates the almost 1,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died during the First World War who have no other grave but the sea. The Military Medal in this image has been photographically added, then rephotographed to produce this print.
