Portrait of 1689 Private (Pte) Normal Leslie McLean, 39th Battalion from Korumburra, Victoria. [Although shown wearing the rank badge of Corporal, there is no record of his ever holding this rank.] A 20 year old station hand prior to enlisting on 15 February 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 1st Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 27 May 1916. Following further training in England, he proceeded to join the 39th Battalion at Armentieres, France on 15 January 1917. Pte McLean was killed in action near Ploegsteert, Belgium on 29 May 1917 and is buried in the Strand Military Cemetery, Ploegsteert. His brother, 1363 Pte Angus Robert McLean, 3rd Battalion was killed in action at Gallipoli on 17 July 1915. [See image H06369.]
