Description
Studio portrait of 2196 Private (Pte) John (Jack) McLeod, 4th Australian Light Horse Regiment from Warburton, Victoria. A 38 year old grazier prior to enlisting on 10 September 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 15th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Katuna (A13) on 9 March 1916. Following further training in England, he joined the 7th Infantry Battalion in France on 10 November 1916. After several periods in hospital with a number of illnesses, he was wounded in action on 18 April 1918 and died that same day. Pte McLeod is buried in the Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France. His brother, 956 Trooper Angus McLeod also served, and died of wounds at Gallipoli on 7 October 1915. [See image H06750.]
