Description
Studio portrait of 7303 Sapper Abraham McManus, 6th Field Company Engineers from Toowoomba, Queensland. An 18 year old carter prior to enlisting on 5 November 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 5th Reinforcements from Sydney on 31 March 1916 aboard HMAT Star of Victoria. Though he served mainly with the 6th Field Company Engineers, Sapper McManus was transferred for two short periods to the 24th Battalion. At one time he was charged with the crime of failing to massage his feet with whale oil when ordered to do so by an NCO and had to forfeit two day's pay. On 16 or 17 September he was killed in action near Ypres and is buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium.
