Description

Studio portrait of 1501 Sergeant (Sgt) Arthur Stuart Meade, 1st Battalion from Bathurst, NSW. He is shown wearing the uniform of a Lieutenant and it was possibly taken while he was serving in the 41st Infantry, Militia. A 21 year old locomotive fitter prior to enlisting on 26 October 1914, he was promoted to Sergeant on 1 January 1915 before embarking for overseas service with the 3rd Reinforcements of the 1st Battalion from Sydney, NSW aboard HMAT Seang Choon (A49) on 11 February 1915. After arriving in Egypt, he joined the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli on 7 May 1915 and was killed in action on 5 June 1915. Sgt Meade is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey.
