Portrait of 687 Private (Pte) William Thomas Menzies, 25th Battalion from Rockhampton, Queensland. A 35 year old carpenter and joiner prior to enlisting on 8 March 1915, he embarked for overseas service with C Company from Brisbane, Queensland aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 29 June 1915. Shortly after disembarking in Egypt, he sailed for Gallipoli on 4 September and remained there until the evacuation back to Egypt in December. When the 25th Battalion proceeded to France in March, Pte Menzies remained behind in Egypt for hospital treatment. He later rejoined the battalion in France on 24 August 1916. He was wounded in action near Albert, France on 31 August 1916 and while undergoing medical treatment at the 49th Casualty Clearing Station at Contay, he died from his wounds on 1 September 1916. Pte Menzies is buried in the Contay British Cemetery, France.
