Description
Studio portrait of 2190 Private (Pte) Edward James Melling, 5th Battalion from North Fitzroy, Victoria. A 22 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 13 March 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 6th Reinforcements from Sydney on 25 June 1915 aboard HMAT Ceramic. He served at Gallipoli where he was wounded in action on 7 August 1915 and died from his wounds on a hospital ship the next day. Pte Melling was buried at seas and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave.
