Studio portrait of 4746 Private Claude Melville, 27th Battalion from Petersburg, South Australia. A 23 year old printer prior to enlisting in the AIF on 29 November 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 11 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas. While serving on the Western Front, he was killed in action on 3 May 1917 near Bullecourt, France and is buried in Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France.
