Studio portrait of 2410 Private Ernest Garner Shipway Merriman, 20th Battalion from Cumnock, NSW. A 29 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 22 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 5th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 6 September 1915. While serving on the Western Front, he was killed in action at Bois-Grenier, France on 5 May 1916 and buried in the Brewery Orchard Cemetery at Bois-Grenier.
