Studio portrait of 763 Trooper Charles Robert Methven, 8th Light Horse Regiment, Machine Gun Squadron from Colac Victoria. Although shown wearing the uniform of a Sergeant, there is no record of his having achieved this rank. A 19 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 23 November 1914, he embarked for overseas with the 3rd Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAS Pera (A4) on 8 February 1915. After serving at Gallipoli, he went on to serve in the Middle East with the 3rd Light Horse Brigade, Machine Gun Squadron and died of wounds during the Second Battle of Gaza on 19 April 1917. He was buried in Branch Wadi Sihan but his grave could not be located after the war and he is commemorated on the Memorial in the Jerusalem War Cemetery with others who have no known grave.
