Studio portrait of 1044 Private (Pte) Charles Miller, 20th Battalion from Burwood, NSW. A 19 year old farm labourer prior to enlisting on 7 May 1915, he embarked for overseas with C Company from Sydney on 25 June 1915 aboard HMAT Berrima (A35). After serving at Gallipoli, he went on to serve on the Western Front where he was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 26 July 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. Pte Miller’s mother wrote “Nineteen months of Active Service at Gallipoli and France during which he was not one day off duty for sickness, crime or any other reason.” This is not accurate as his service record shows that he underwent 14 days Field Punishment No 2 for being asleep on duty at Gallipoli and later another three days Field Punishment No 2 for being absent without leave for 14 hours in Egypt. Field Punishment No 2 consisted of heavy labouring duties.
