Description
Studio portrait of Private (Pte) Frederick Christian Miller, 5th Battalion from Granya, Upper Murray, Victoria. A 37 year old miner prior to enlisting on 29 July 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 12th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40) on 23 November 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he joined the 5th Battalion and went with them to France in March. He was wounded in action on 25 July 1916 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. After recovering, he re-joined his unit in France on 16 January and was again wounded in action on 10 February 1917. Pte Miller died two days later, on 12 February and is buried in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Dernancourt, France.
