Studio portrait of 4749 Private (Pte) Patrick Joseph Miller, 49th Battalion from Emerald, Queensland. A 19 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 21 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 12th Reinforcements of the 26th Battalion from Sydney on 12 April 1916 aboard RMS Mooltan. On arrival in Egypt he transferred to the 49th Battalion and deployed with them to the Western Front. He was wounded in action on 26 September 1917 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to his unit in France on 19 February 1918. Pte Miller was killed in action at Dernancourt, France on 5 April 1918 and is buried in the Serre Road Cemetery No 2, Somme, France. [See also image H01612.]
