Description
Portrait of 105 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Hurtle Samuel Mills, 38th Battalion from Lake Boga, Swan Hill, Victoria. A 27 year old driver prior to enlisting on 2 February 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 38th Battalion Headquarters, Machine Gun Section from Melbourne, Victoria aboard HMAT Runic (A54) on 20 June 1916. Following further training in England, he proceeded to France in November 1916 and was killed in action near Armentieres on 8 December 1916. L Cpl Mills is buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France. His brother, 106 L Cpl Charles Andrew Mills embarked with him in the 38th Battalion and then transferred to the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion before returning to Australia at the end of hostilities.
