Studio portrait of 2456 Private (Pte) Alexander Leslie Montgomery, 57th Battalion from North Melbourne. A 24 year old plumber prior to enlisting on 23 June 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 5th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9) on 25 September 1916. After further training in England, he proceeded to France in October 1916. Pte Montgomery was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium on 25 September 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres. A memorial stone was erected in the Melbourne General Cemetery, Presbyterian Compartment to commemorate the death of Pte Montgomery and his brother Lance Corporal Robert Montgomery who was killed in action in Belgium on 9 October 1917.
