Studio portrait of 2416 Corporal (Cpl) John Albert Morgan MM, from Sydney, NSW. A 19 year old ship’s deck hand prior to enlisting on 15 May 1915, he embarked for overseas service as a private with the 7th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Orsova (A67) on 14 July 1915. Following service at Gallipoli, he proceeded to France in March 1916 and shortly afterwards was promoted to lance corporal. In late 1916 he was hospitalised for influenza and then in July 1917 was promoted to corporal (Cpl). He was again hospitalised in February 1918 for bronchitis and evacuated to England before being returned to Australia on 30 January 1919. Cpl Morgan was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for gallantry in action on 7 May 1917 near Bullecourt, France. He served as a private in the Second World War from 29 May to 28 November 1940.
