Portrait of 2381 Private (Pte) Cedric Stanley Morrison, 3rd Battalion from Lewisham. NSW. A 20 year old clerk with previous service with the 33rd Infantry Militia prior to enlisting in the AIF on 2 May 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 7th Reinforcements from Sydney aboard HMAT Orsova (A67) on 14 July 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he joined the 3rd Battalion at Gallipoli on 2 September 1915. Back in Egypt, he transferred to the 1st Machine Gun Company on 12 March 1916 and later that month went with them to France where he was promoted to Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 30 July 1916. L Cpl Morrison was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for courage and skill while in charge of a machine gun at Haplincourt, France on 9 April 1917. He advanced over heavy rain-soaked ground under a heavy barrage of hostile fire, silenced the enemy and assisted in capturing the enemy’s position. He was later killed in action on 26 September 1917 at Chateau Segard near Voormezeele, Belgium. Although buried near where he fell, after the war his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
