Studio portrait of 2657A Private (Pte) Waldemar Hendrig Mortensen from Petersham, NSW. A 26 year old labourer prior to enlisting as John Sydney Shaw on 14 June 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 8th Reinforcements of the 7th Battalion from Melbourne on 26 August 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises (A68). After serving with the battalion at Gallipoli, he returned to Egypt and then in March 1916 proceeded to France where he transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion. Pte Mortensen was killed in action near Pozieres on 22/27 July 1916. He is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
