Studio portrait of 447 Sergeant (later Second Lieutenant) James Cassie Murray, 7th Australian Machine Gun Company from Townsville, Queensland. A 25 year old joiner prior to enlisting on 15 March 1915, he embarked for overseas service as a Corporal with the Machine Gun Section of the 25th Infantry Battalion from Brisbane aboard HMAS Aeneas (A60) on 29 June 1915. While serving at Gallipoli, he was promoted to Sergeant on 5 October and a month later was taken ill with jaundice. He was evacuated to a hospital in Alexandria and then in Cairo only rejoining his unit in Egypt on 20 January 1916. After being appointed a Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) on 14 March he joined the 7th Brigade Machine Gun Section and went with them to France later that month. On 7 June, he was slightly wounded in action but remained on duty. 2nd Lt Murray was killed in action at Pozieres on 5 August 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
