Description

Studio portrait of 4560 Private (Pte) Edward Mynott, 6th Battalion from West Brunswick, Victoria. When enlisting on 4 October 1915, he claimed to be 18 years old but was in fact only 17. (His mother later wrote to the Army advising them of this and asking for him to be sent home. This request was approved but before he could leave, he was killed in action on 16 August 1916.) Pte Mynott embarked for overseas service with the 14th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 28 January 1916 and sailed for Egypt. Two weeks after joining the 6th Battalion on the Western Front, he was killed in action at Pozieres, France and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. Pte Mynott had four older brothers who also served and returned to Australia. They were: 4503 Pte George Mynott, 22nd Battalion (18 years old on enlistment); 1110 Pte William Ernest Mynott, 5th Pioneer Battalion (20 years old on enlistment); James Edward Mynott, 31st Battalion (23 years old on enlistment) and 5149 Pte Albert Mynott, Australian Corps School (26 years old on enlistment).
