Description

Ramale Mission, Kokopo Area, New Britain. A German Mission doctor, wife and family, part of a group of 300 internees at Ramale Mission. Their son, Franz Joseph, was born at Vunapope Mission the day the Japanese landed at Rabaul, 23 January 1942. A second child, Christa, died early in camp because the Japanese refused medication necessary to save her. All internees at the Mission were liberated when troops of HQ 11 Division occupied the area following the surrender of the Japanese.
