Description

Studio portrait of Captain (Capt) John Edward Nix, 25th Battalion from Bundaberg, Queensland. A 24 year old reporter prior to being appointed a Second Lieutenant in the AIF on 12 April 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Lieutenant with C Company from Brisbane, Queensland aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) on 29 June 1915. While serving at Gallipoli, he was Mentioned in Despatches and then went on to serve on the Western Front where he was promoted to Captain. After being wounded in action in France on 29 July 1916, he was evacuated to England for medical treatment and returned to his unit two months later. Capt Nix was killed in action on 5 November 1916 at Eaucort L’Abbaye, France and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave. His brothers who also served overseas were: Lieutenant Henry Jarrett Nix, 31st Battalion; 5629 Private Francis William Nix, 26th Battalion; and 405 Sergeant George Thomas Nix, 5th Light Horse Regiment. They all returned to Australia.
