Studio portrait of Lieutenant William Eustace O'Halloran, 56th Battalion from Sydney, NSW. A 30 year old shire clerk prior to enlisting as a Private in the AIF on 7 January 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Lieutenant with the 5th Reinforcements of the 20th Battalion from Sydney on 6 September 1915 aboard HMAT Ballarat. Shortly after arriving in Egypt he transferred to the 56th Battalion and went with them to the Western Front in June 1916. He was killed in action near Louveral, France on 2 April 1917 and buried near Boursies, France however his grave could not be located again after the war and his name was inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
