Studio portrait of 3439 Driver James O'Neill, 49th Battalion from Norman Park, Brisbane, Queensland. An 18 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 26 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 11th Reinforcements of the 9th Battalion from Brisbane on 21 October 1915 aboard HMAT Seang Bee. After arriving in Egypt he transferred to the 49th Battalion on 2 April 1916 and went with them to France in June 1916. He was killed in action near Mouquet Farm, France on 3 September 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
