Studio portrait of Private (Pte) John Oswald, 44th Battalion from East Perth, Western Australia. A 21 year old iron moulder prior to enlisting on 25 January 1916, he embarked for overseas service with C Company from Fremantle, Western Australia aboard HMAT Suevic (A29) on 6 June 1916. After disembarking in England, he proceeded to France in November. Pte Oswald was wounded in action on 2 January 1917 and died from his wounds that same day. He is buried in the Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France.
