Studio portrait of 2461 Sergeant (Sgt) Maurice William Pearse, 53rd Battalion. A shipping clerk from Strathfield, NSW prior to enlistment, Sgt Pearse embarked with the rank of Private with the 7th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion from Sydney on HMAT Orsova on 14 July 1915. After transferring to the 53rd Battalion he was promoted to Sergeant and on 16 August 1918, aged 22, died of wounds received in action and was buried in the Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France.
