Studio portrait of 2247 Corporal (Cpl) Norman Robert Richardson, 56th Battalion. A blacksmith from Youanmite, Vic prior to enlistment, Cpl Richardson originally enlisted with the serial number of 2447 as a Shoeing Smith with the Divisional Ammunition Column and embarked from Sydney on HMAT Pera on 26 September 1914. For reasons not stated, he was discharged when the unit reached Albany, WA and later re-enlisted and embarked with the rank of Private with the 4th Reinforcements, 56th Battalion from Sydney on HMAT Port Sydney on 4 September 1916. Later promoted to Corporal, he returned to Australia on 5 March 1919. Later admitted to the Alexandria Hospital, Melbourne, he died on 5 September 1919 as a result of gas poisoning and influenza and was buried in the Alexandria Cemetery, Victoria.
