Studio portrait of 1811 Private (Pte) Albert Herman Roberts (served as Albert Roberts), 6th Battalion from Warrnambool, Victoria. A 22 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 4 January 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Wiltshire (A18) on 13 April 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he proceeded to Gallipoli where he was taken ill and evacuated to hospital on 24 July 1915. He was later evacuated to England where he remained until March 1918 when he proceeded to France. Shortly after arriving in France, he was again hospitalized and did not re-join the 6th Battalion on the front line until 7 July. Pte Roberts was killed in action on 23 August 1918 at Foucaucourt Ridge, France and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
