Description

Studio portrait of 3227 Private (Pte) William Henry Rust, 23rd Battalion. An orchardist from Doncaster, Vic prior to enlistment, Pte Rust embarked with the 7th Reinforcements from Melbourne on HMAT Commonwealth on 26 November 1915. Later transferring to the 59th Battalion with a service number of 3227A, he was killed in action in Belgium on 26 September 1917, aged 22 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial. His step-father, 1721 Corporal Harry Drysdale Graham, 23rd Battalion had previously been killed in action in France.
