Studio portrait of 2380 Private William Royal Selkirk, 4th Light Horse Regiment from Ballarat, Victoria. A 20 year old coachbuilder prior to enlisting on 10 November 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 16th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 18 April 1916 aboard HMAT Itria. After arriving in Egypt, he spent a short time training with the Camel Corps before transferring to the 4th Light Horse Regiment. While serving with that regiment, he was wounded in action at Summeil, (in what was then Palestine) on 12 November 1917. He died of his wounds on 17 November 1917 and is buried in the Beersheba War Cemetery, Israel.
