Description

Studio portrait of Brigadier General Victor Conradsdorf Morisset Sellheim, CB, CMG, 1st Division Headquarters from Toorak, Victoria. After receiving a permanent commission in the Queensland Defence Force in 1896, he served in the Boer War from 20 October 1899 to 15 December 1900 attached to British units as a special service officer with the rank of Major, and later with the Queensland Mounted Infantry. He was awarded a Companion of the Order of the Bath for his service in the Boer War. At the outbreak of the First World War, he embarked from Melbourne on 22 October 1914 aboard HMAT Orvieto with the rank of Colonel and attached to Headquarters, 1st Australian Division. He was appointed Officer Commanding the Australian Intermediate Base, Egypt, and was given the rank of Brigadier General in February 1916. In May 1916 he went to England where he commanded the AIF Administrative Headquarters in London, and Australian troops in Britain. Brigadier General Sellheim's service record indicates he was awarded the Companion of the Order of St Michael & St George in 1916 "for services rendered in connection with military operations in the field". His service record notes he returned to Australia in October 1916 following a Medical Board decision that he was "not medically fit for active service abroad" but "fit for service in Australia". Brigadier General Sellheim's appointment in the AIF was terminated in November 1916, after which he resumed duties as Adjutant General at Army Headquarters, Melbourne. He also undertook the role of Quartermaster General and was a member of the Military Board. In 1920 he was promoted Major General and continued to serve in the army until 1927 when he resigned and was appointed Administrator of Norfolk Island. Major General Sellheim died on Norfolk Island on 25 January 1928.
